THE MAN WHO CAME BEFORE HIS TIMEChris Adelugba
Jeremiah Oyeniyi Obafemi Awolowo (March 06, 1909 – May 09, 1987)
111 years ago yesterday,
God gave us a gift from little known Ikenne. A committed family man. A blunt and unpretentious man who failed to meet the mark as a witty, pretentious, double-sided, smooth-talking and deceptive politician, and so never got to rule Nigeria. Ofcourse you represented different things to different people, but you left no one in doubt as to your vision and leadership qualities.
YOU SAW TOMORROW – YOU PREDICTED OUR DRIFT TO THE HOBBESIAN STATE OF NATURE.
You worked tirelessly to develop the Western Region. You defined your priorities early and worked relentlessly in pursuit of your vision.
For you, it was always about tomorrow. So, beyond your accomplishments, you also warned us of the consequences of not aligning development with the real beneficiaries – the people. You infact predicted our drift into today’s quasi-anarchy that finds explanation only in the hobbesian state of nature.
Though you spoke to unyielding ears, your words were clear: “if we do not prioritise education and human development, we are going nowhere.”
YOU WERE NOT JUST AN ASTUTE ADMINISTRATOR, YOU WERE A DEEP THINKER.
I salute your vision and courage. Happy Posthumous 111th Birthday Baba Awolowo.
